SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY is a specialty area within the fields of psychology and education. School psychologists are trained to understand, diagnose and intervene with children and young adults who manifest a variety of learning, developmental and behavioral issues. School psychologists identify individual strengths and weaknesses within these areas and help parents, teachers and other professionals recognize and  enhance these skills.  SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS typically consult with pediatricians, psychiatrists, neurologists, speech pathologists and other professionals.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS can be certified by the State of Florida, Department of Education, to practice within the public  and/or private schools, or licensed by the Department of Health to practice privately. SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS typically possess a Masters, Specialist or Doctoral degrees, and must complete an internship for public or private practice. Privately practicing SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS must, in addition, present with additional years of supervised experience and pass a state exam.

PSYCHOLOGICAL / EDUCATIONAL / DEVELOPMENTAL ASSESSMENTS........ are provided when there is a need to obtain information regarding youngsters' cognitive/intellectual growth, school adjustment, information processing, behavioral adjustment or young childrens' developmental status.  In addition, evaluations may be conducted to obtain access to special education, standardized testing accommodations, social security disability benefits, vocational placements or to assist with the medical management of various disorders.

COUNSELING/PSYCHOTHERAPY services are provided to children and their families, preschool thru college age. Counseling is typically short term and may involve children, parents or the entire family. Counseling approaches are eclectic (involve various approaches) including parenting skill enhancement, behavior modification, cognitive therapy (exploring the connection between thoughts and behaviors), family therapy, psychoeducational management (specifically teaching new skills), bibliotherapy (readings), etc.

Our practice is committed to enhancing the growth of children thru effective consultation with area professionals and involvement in  various community outreach programs. Dr. Langenthal is an active member of the Broward County Mental Health Association and provides community screenings through that organization. We frequently consult with parents and area professionals regarding school placement decisions, assist in the development of educational plans and participate on committees to develop service delivery models for schools. We have in addition trained practicing school psychologists.
