Barkley,R. (2000).  Taking Charge of ADHD: The Complete, Authoritative Guide For Parents Revised.  Guilford.

Russell Barkley is the "guru" of ADHD research and practice. Well worth the investment.

 

Barry, V. (1997).  The Dog Ate My Homework.  Personal Responsibility - How We Avoid It and What To Do About It.  Andrews and McMell.

We all complain about others' lack of responsibility. A useful guide for adults and children.

 

Block, M. (1996).   No More Ritalin: Treating ADHD Without Drugs. 

Kensington Publishing.

A look at the variety of non-medical treatment approaches to ADHD.

 

Bruns, J. (1992).  They Can But They Don't.  Helping Students Overcome Work Inhibition.  Penguin Books.

Highly recommended if your child is seen as "lazy," not self-sufficient, etc. Useful ideas to redirect these patterns.

 

Carlson, R. (1997).  Don't Sweat The Small Stuff - And It's All Small Stuff! Simple Ways To Keep The Little Things from Taking Over Your Life.  Hyperion.

Ways to "keep your kool," despite all the annoying things that happen around us.

 

Eastman, M. (1994).  Taming the Dragon In Your Child.  John Wiley.

For parents of children with explosive tempers, anger reactions, etc. Lots of useful techniques.

 

Gardner, R. (1993).  Multiple Intelligences: The Theory In PracticeBair Books.

If you thought "IQ" says it all, read Gardner's work.  A classic.

 

Goleman, D. (1995).  Emotional Intelligence.  Bantam Books.

Understanding how our emotional "smarts" may be more meaningful than our IQ.

 

Hartman, Thomas. (2003). The Edison Gene: ADHD and the Gift of the Hunter Child.

Thomas Hartman discusses a theory that ADHD is not a disorder but was a highly adaptive set of skills used for hunting/gathering, but less adequate now.

 

Klindon, D. (2000).  Raising Cain -- Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys. 

Ballantine Books.

How society misdirects boys' emotions and how to activate emotional awareness in guys.

A compendium of "how to" advice on school related issues, from helping your child with his homework to understanding standardized test scores, etc.

 

Packer, A (1992).  Bringing Up Parents: A Teenager's Guide.  Free Spirit Press.

Helping teenagers understand why parents of teenagers behave the way they do. Presented in humorous fashion.

 

Paladino L. (1997).  The Edison Trait - Saving the Spirit of Your Non-Conforming Child.

Great for parents of strong willed "oppositional" or unique children.

 

Rosemond, J. (1995).  Parent Power.

Traditional approaches to parenting. Helps parents get things "back under control."

 

Shaywitz, S.  (2003).  Overcoming Dyslexia.  Guilford.

Current brain research on reading disorders and what to do about them. Clarifies our understanding of the biological causes of reading disabilities.

   

Slandler, N. (2001).  Ophelia Mom: Loving and Letting Go of Your Adolescent Daughter.

How mothers and daughters grow and mature with each other.

 

Schwartz, P. and Cappello, D. (2002).  Ten Talks Parents Must Have With Their Children About Sex and Character.  Hyperion Press. 

Lots of useful dialogue and discussions that you can use as a springboard with your kids.

Alternatives to medical management for ADHD.

 

Weissman, R. (2002).  Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends and Other Realities of Adolescence.

The title speaks for itself.  A must guide for parents of young adolescent girls.

 

Wilens, T. (2004).  Straight Talk About Psychiatric Medications for Kids.  Guilford.  Understand the ins and outs of medical management for behavioral disorders.

 

Wolf, A. (1996).  Get Out of My Life...But First Can You Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall?  (Revised Edition).

A must if you have a pre-teen daughter or teenager. Presented in both a serious and humorous fashion, this great little book will finally help you understand why your teenagers act the way they do and what do about it!
